That's what they write about the production of the Astrakhan state theatre of Opera and Ballet by our colleagues in Moscow:
"The direction of the opera "The damnation of Faust" which wasn't in Russia during 169 years-that is never, inexplicably took place in two theatres for the season. And Astrakhan for several months outstripped the Bolshoi theatre, so that the honor of the Russian premiere will remain on its account. The key to understanding of this performance is that the "Damnation" – not absolutely the opera, at least, in system of coordinates of the 19th century. This is a vocal-instrumental canvas, which consists of continuous audio arrays, rather immersing into the world of Goethe's tragedy than giving answers to the questions who he loved, why he died and when sang the upper note. The stage director Konstantin Balakin felt "non-format" material and expressed it in a scenic paradox. On the one hand – the new theatrical and visual technologies that better to see once. With another – extreme static character: the chorus, supers and the ballet (together – the main character of the performance) in each scene monotonously repeat simple actions, imperceptibly tightening us in a condition of a reflection or meditation – to each his own. Balakin put "The damnation of Faust" as it is accepted to stage operas of composers minimalists and by that unexpectedly opened important, if not a key, but a layer of dramatic art of Berlioz."
