The Speckled Hen is Russian fairy tale for the youngest children. Once upon a time, there have been a grandfather and a grandmother, and then what? Traditionally, the tale tells us that the golden egg has not brought happiness to the grandfather and the grandmother but only grief and tears. That is one version, but in the musical performance directed by Catherine Sablina grandfather and grandmother are merry creatures, they are young at heart, love dancing, are wearing modern clothes, and the Speckled Hen can sing opera.
The musical fairy tale author is a talented Rostov composer Vitaly Khodosh. There are works of various genres in the composer’s portfolio. They are instrumental choral works written especially for the Children's music school pupils. The operas by Khodosh abound with literary and musical allusions. When you hear from the Speckled Hen the well-known couplet "a habit is a gift of heavens, it can replace us happiness", you inadvertently break into a smile. Vitaly Khodosh is called "Marshak in music." The music for kids is rarely written today. Less often young listeners have the opportunity to listen to this music. The author’s desire to bring his works to the children and children's season ticket work for pupils at the Astrakhan Theatre, entitled "Unusual Lessons in the Theater", have met here.
