Art Council

Today the Astrakhan Opera and Ballet Theatre has held the Art Council, where the theatre Chief Stage Director Konstantin Balakin and Chief Artist Elena Vershinina presented their concept of the new opera.

In Astrakhan the opera “Tosca” has been staged twice in the Musical Theatre. Today, “Tosca” is one of the most popular opera productions in the best theatres of the world. Giacomo Puccini as an Italian took the plot of "Tosca"  very close to heart. This great story of love and betrayal, tured by the Italian composer into the opera, goes on touching human  hearts around the world  for more than a century . It speaks about Italy, which is suffering and struggling for its freedom. The libretto is based on the modern drama of the French writer Victorien Sardou, written for the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt.

On the directors’ concept ​​the the new performance will be accepted as a catching documentary film. Spectators will be transferred in those days when the main characters - the artist Mario Cavaradossi and the opera singer Floria Tosca have become victims of the period of despotism, tortures, prisons, executions. Being far from political struggle, they have been involved in it.

There are three places of action in the performance: the church of Sant'Andrea with “Descent Jesus from the Cross” paintings, the secret police apartments, and the area of ​​the prison yard.

The premiere is scheduled for May 20-21
